Shopify vs StoreConnect: Securing Your eCommerce IP and Brand Ownership
While we at StoreConnect pride ourselves on providing an unmatched out-of-the-box set of features, as detailed in our comprehensive comparison chart, we never realized that the competition, specifically Shopify, demands an exceptionally broad, irrevocable license to their clients’ trademarks, logos, and materials.
The Hidden Clause
At StoreConnect we believe that your data belongs to you, but at Shopify, they sub-license all of your data, for all time, worldwide! Even if you close your account they still retain this right. This includes your trademarks, service marks and logos associated with your Store. It permits them to reproduce and create derivative works of your materials. Furthermore, they can grant this right to whomever they choose.

For full details, see clause 8.1 of Shopify’s terms regarding your Intellectual Property.
StoreConnect & Salesforce’s Difference
In contrast, Salesforce in their terms make no such claim “6.3 … SFDC acquires no right, title or interest from Customer or its licensors under this Agreement in or to any Customer Data.”
And we at StoreConnect, per our terms, use the standard approach common to most eCommerce platforms:
- If you are a StoreConnect Subscriber: (a) you license us on an irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide basis to use and publish your StoreConnect Subscriber Data via StoreConnect as required by us to provide you with StoreConnect SaaS;
So, in addition to the awesome, out-of-the-box features shown below, that all run natively inside the trusted and secure Salesforce environment, you can be rest assured that your data, your Trademarks and all of your intellectual property remains in your full control.
